Launched in 2011 and in partnership with the O.R Tambo International Airport and The City of Ekurhuleni, the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Liberation Walk aims to highlight the role played the Tambo’s in the liberation of the country, in fostering unity and racial integration amongst all South Africans.
Each year the campaign has a different theme; in 2011 the theme was ‘Walk for those who Cannot’, in 2012 the theme was ‘Walk for Education’ and in 2013 the theme was ‘Ten Thousand Feet United for Education’, the theme from 2013 has become more of a campaign which will follow on in 2014. This campaign is aimed at ensuring every child has a right to education.
The Liberation Walk aims to give South Africans an opportunity to get involved in causes that are focussed on education. With the Walk, the public can be part of the campaign and therefore create awareness for the education campaign. Proceeds from sponsorship and participation fees will be donated to learners from poor backgrounds, as will be identified by educational authorities.
