08 May Massive statue of Tambo to be erected at airport
In observation of the 100 years since the birth of Oliver Reginald Tambo, a nine-meter high bronze statue of the struggle icon will be erected at OR Tambo International Airport, in October.
This was disclosed at the OR Tambo Memorial Lecture, held in Wattville, recently, which was attended by some 2 000 people.
Susan Shabangu, an ANC national executive member, was among those addressing the crowd.
“I urge that all ANC Ekurhuleni leaders remain humble and put the needs of the people first,” she said.
“It is important that the leadership goes back to the basics of interacting with its communities in keeping up with the legacy of OR Tambo.
“The legacy is about working with the people and listening to them.”
Tambo’s son, Dali Tambo, thanked the metro for the continuous respect and recognition given to his family.
Dali also said the ANC must continue to fight the challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment the country is facing, especially among young people.
ANC Ekurhuleni chief whip Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi said, “We are planning to roll out a number of commemorative programmes and events to celebrate the centenary of Tambo’s birth.”
