O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative

The O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative (ORTARCHI) aims to honour a leading figure in the development of African unity; have a catalytic impact on the development of research infrastructure on the continent; and contribute to knowledge production and high-end skills.

The Initiative seeks to establish 10 O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs across the African continent. Chairholders are expected to meet set targets for staff development, and additional funds will be provided for supporting post-doctoral and postgraduate students under the supervision of the respective Chair holders.

The National Research Foundation and the Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Foundation are supporting scholarships geared towards female, African students. These additional funds will be provided for supporting doctoral students under the supervision of the respective Chair holders and their collaborating partners at South African institutions.
