Struggle icon and former ANC President, Oliver Tambo has been honoured in Gabon. The Central African country held a memorial lecture at the Omar Bongo University in Libreville.

Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa attended the event as part of the visit to improve relations between South Africa and Gabon. He also delivered a the keynote address.

Tambo would have turned 100 in 2017.

Gabonese nationals got to learn a bit more about Tambo’s legacy of sacrifice and exemplary leadership.

“Many people would know of Nelson Mandela, but Oliver Reginald Tambo – had it not been because of him, his sterling leadership – not so many people would have known who Nelson Mandela was,” said Mthethwa.

Some government officials and local artists are visiting Gabon for an Arts and Culture exchange programme.

“What is mostly important is strengthening relations between the two countries because we have long standing relationships,” Deputy Minister of Tourism, Tokozile Xaka said.

Officials are hoping the Arts and Culture exchange programme will help dispel perceptions of xenophobia in South Africa.
